About Dr. Aguilar
Mirtha Aguilar, MD, is a family medicine physician at Emory Clinic at Dunwoody. Dr. Aguilar received her medical education at the Universidad Mayor San Andres in Bolivia, her residency at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in Chicago, IL and a fellowship at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL.
She describes herself as “a family physician who likes to approach medical care in a very holistic way.”
A Personal Approach
Before she meets with any new patient, Dr. Aguilar reviews their medical history to prepare for their appointment. She wants her patients to know that she is very interested in their health, which helps to reassure patients. “They will open up more when we talk,” she says.
Dr. Aguilar also likes to chat about non-medical aspects of her patients’ lives. “This is really important to me,” she says. “This patient is not just someone I see for 10 minutes, but someone I care about as a person.”
The Roots of Medical Problems
As a holistic physician, Dr. Aguilar will go beyond the symptoms to understand what’s causing the medical problem. “Is there a family history? Is it related to their lifestyle? I spend time talking with the patient about these things because it’s important to learn why the patient has become sick,” she explains.
Helping Patients Make Good Decisions
Dr. Aguilar is careful to give her patients accurate information so they can make good medical decisions. “I want to empower patients so they take responsibility for their own care. I want patients to understand why they need to make lifestyle changes or take medications, if necessary. That’s the safest approach, so they can make the best decisions.”
She has practiced medicine in the rural communities of Bolivia, her home country, and shares that perspective with her patients. “People here are privileged to have high-quality healthcare and patients should take advantage of that,” she says. Patients will appreciate that Dr. Aguilar speaks both English and Spanish fluently.
Dr. Aguilar's clinical interests include family medicine, preventive care, primary care, adult health, women’s health, and outpatient gynecologic procedures.
