I received my undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania, where I majored in psychology. I then attended the University of Houston, where I received my PhD in clinical psychology. I completed my psychology internship and postdoctoral residency training at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Throughout my career, I have participated in a number of leadership development and policy fellowships. Before joining the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in 1990, I spent 6 years on the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine. I love my position at Emory, because it allows me to balance my clinical, teaching, scholarly, and administrative/leadership interests. Clinically, I enjoy working with physicians, academics, attorneys, ballet dancers and other artists in individual, couples, and family therapy. My psychotherapeutic practice that is integrative in nature and incorporates multiple approaches in a way that is tailored to each individual/couple/family. I strive to create a safe, compassionate, and longstanding therapuetic relationship with each of my patients that empowers them to heal from past traumas, forge and sustain positive relationships with others, flourish educationally/occupationally, and pursue meaningful activities in their life. My research, most of which is based at Grady Health System, addresses the culturally competent assessment of treatment of suicidal behavior and family violence (childhood maltreatment, intimate partner violence). I value teaching and supervising future generations of psychologists and psychiatrists so that they provide compassionate, culturally-humble, and systemically-informed psychotherapy to diverse individuals. One aspect of my career that I have found particularly fulfilling are my leadership roles at Emory University (e.g., Chair, School of Medicine Recognitions Committee; Chair, Emory Unviersity Tenure, Promotions, and Appointments Committee; Past President, Emory University Senate) and nationally (e.g., Past President, American Psychological Association (2014); Past President, American Board of Professional Psychology; Past Chair, Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers). I highly value participating in social justice related advocacy endeavors and offering commentary to the media related to the psychological impact of events. When not at work, I serve as the Psychologist for the Atlanta Ballet, take ballet classes almost daily, and teach adult ballet classes regularly. I also love traveling and am actively pursuing my travel bucket list, sometimes combining that travel with professional engagements.
