About

Dr. Wichmann completed his medical training in Germany, at the Universities of Münster and Freiburg, graduating in 1984 with a medical degree from the University of Freiburg. He received postdoctoral training in Pharmacology at the University of Freiburg, as well as training in in vivo primate electrophysiology in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins University. In the early 1990s, Dr. Wichmann completed residency training in Neurology at Emory University, and became a faculty member in the movement disorder division in Emory’s Department of Neurology in 1996, specializing in Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. He is currently the A. Worley Brown Professor of Neurology and Associate Director of the movement disorder division at Emory. Dr. Wichmann is part of the deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery team at Emory, providing intraoperative electrophysiologic expertise, as well as pre- and postoperative assessments of patients.

Dr. Wichmann’s research focuses on brain activity changes that are associated with Parkinson’s disease, and the effects of DBS on brain networks, with the goal of developing more effective and safer interventions to help those with Parkinsonism or involuntary movements. His work has been continuously NIH funded since 1996, and has been published in high-impact journals, including Science, the Journal of Neurophysiology and the Journal of Neuroscience. Dr. Wichmann also serves as PI and project PI of Emory’s NINDS-funded Udall Center, helping to coordinate collaborations in Parkinson’s disease research within Emory and between Emory and other institutions.

I feel extremely fortunate to have Dr. Wichmann and his team as my care providers. He is so patient and kind and.listens to all my questions and worries! I trust him to keep me in the loop about my condition. He never rushes the appt and offers more than one solution to my situations. I'm probably not his favorite patient, as I tend to be a bit of a rebellious senior Citizen and not good with change. But he is always kind and thorough and patient with me and my questions!

Dr. Thomas Wichmann is my doctor. He is the best of the best . He NEVER acts like he is in a hurry and really listens to my concerns. He responds to my questions on "my chart" in a very timely manner. I'm so glad he's my doctor.

He listened keenly, and actually wrote his notes on paper instead of filling out a form on a computer, or using AI to compile his notes

Dr Wichman talks with patients at their level of understanding, and does not talk down to them as many doctors do. He also takes enough time to listen to their questions and concerns. Excellent
