About

Vikram M. Narayan, MD, FACS, is a board-certified urologist with clinical expertise in managing complex urologic malignancies. His practice includes open, laparoscopic and robotic surgical approaches to prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, as well as the surgical treatment of other urologic cancers such as penile and testicular cancer. He has a clinical and research interest in bladder and urothelial cancers and is internationally recognized for advancing novel intravesical therapies for Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. He practices at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Narayan is an associate professor in the Department of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine. At Grady Memorial Hospital, he serves as interim chief of urology and director of urological oncology. He is also associate chief health informatics officer for Emory Healthcare. In this role, he has been featured by Apple for Emory Healthcare’s pioneering integration of Apple technology with Epic to streamline provider workflows and enhance patient care. Read story.

A native of California who was raised in Florida, Dr. Narayan earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, where he graduated with honors in research. He completed a general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, followed by a fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Narayan’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind bladder cancer treatment responses to improve therapeutic options. During his fellowship, he conducted a year of basic science research on novel therapeutics for urothelial cancers, including intravesical gene therapy, immune-based treatments and the urinary microbiome. He has also led studies on quality outcomes for patients hospitalized after radical cystectomy and conducted methodological research on clinical urologic trials and the transparent reporting of randomized trials and systematic reviews.

Dr. Narayan has authored, contributed to and presented dozens of abstracts, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on urologic oncology and methodological research at national and international medical meetings and in major medical journals. He currently serves as a contact editor for Cochrane Urology.

In 2023, Dr. Narayan participated in the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network’s Fall Summit for Patients and Families. In a video produced by BCAN, he interviews one of his patients, who shares his experience of being treated for bladder cancer. Watch video.

Dr. Narayan is an excellent doctor! He is knowledgeable, compassionate, and willing (and patient enough) to listen to patient concerns. And from reading about his experience and research realize he is a younger doctor, but already has an extensive base of knowledge and exposure/participation in trials of new treatment options.
