Noninvasive Treatments for TBI

Noninvasive treatments—treatments that do not require breaking or entering the skin—may include:

  • Blood pressure medication
  • Pain and nausea medication
  • Physical and mental rest, including stress-reducing activities
  • Physical therapy and speech therapy
  • Ongoing observation

These treatments are usually safer and allow you to heal faster.

Treatments for Severe TBI

If there is swelling in your brain, your doctors will respond with:

  • Intravenous (IV) fluids
  • Lowering your body temperature
  • Draining fluid from your brain by drilling a small hole in the skull (ventriculostomy)
  • Removing part of the skull to relieve pressure
