John Galloway, MD, is a native of Atlanta and Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. He graduated from Erskine College before attending Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Galloway practices general surgery at Emory Clinic and Emory University Hospital. Throughout his distinguished career at Emory, he has held numerous leadership positions, including Medical Director of the Emory Nutrition and Metabolic Support Service and Associate Physician Director of Emory Hospital’s Wound and Ostomy Care Program. As a junior attending, Dr. Galloway maintained a busy general surgery practice while also helping to develop Emory’s liver transplant program. In 1987, he participated in Georgia’s first liver transplant, performed at Emory University Hospital. In 1989, Dr. Galloway obtained one of the first board certifications offered in Surgical Critical Care. He subsequently served as Medical Director of the General Surgery and Transplant Intensive Care Unit from 1990 to 2005 and continued his clinical practice in the intensive care unit until 2023. Dr. Galloway is board certified in General Surgery and holds Certificates of Added Qualifications in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, and Nutrition Support. Twenty percent of his clinical practice was devoted to serving as an intensivist in the Transplant and Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Emory Hospital, where he provided specialized critical care to patients undergoing complex transplant and surgical procedures. While maintaining a broad-based general surgery practice, Dr. Galloway’s areas of specialized expertise include the management of enterocutaneous fistulas, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, complications of acute and chronic pancreatic and hepatobiliary disease, portal hypertension surgery, and treatment of short bowel syndrome. Dr. Galloway’s research closely parallel his clinical practice and include mechanisms of small bowel adaptation in short bowel syndrome, techniques in abdominal wall reconstruction, nutrition in critically ill patients, and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. He has authored numerous publications in these areas. Dr. Galloway has received multiple teaching awards from the Emory Department of Surgery and has been recognized numerous times as one of Atlanta’s Top Doctors by Atlanta Magazine. In 2010, he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medal from his alma mater, Erskine College, in recognition of his contributions to humanity. Throughout his career, Dr. Galloway has demonstrated a strong commitment to service and global health. He has participated in numerous medical mission trips, teaching and performing surgery in Pakistan, Honduras, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and East Africa. In 2026, Dr. Galloway received the Award of Honor from Emory’s Medical Alumni Association, recognizing his distinguished contributions and commitment to the medical profession, education, service, and the Emory community. The Award of Honor is conferred upon a medical alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated exceptional service to the Medical Alumni Association, Emory University School of Medicine, Emory University, or the profession of medicine. It stands among the School of Medicine’s most prestigious alumni distinctions and recognizes individuals whose careers reflect uncommon dedication, leadership, and integrity. Dr. Galloway’s career exemplifies a lifelong commitment to excellence in surgical care, critical care, nutrition, education, research, mentorship, and service. His contributions have had a lasting impact on generations of patients, trainees, colleagues, and the broader Emory community.
