About Dr. Thompson
Tina-Ann Thompson, MD, is a primary care doctor at Emory at Rockbridge. She is a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, and completed the Emory Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Thompson is also the Program Lead for Emory Healthcare’s Primary Care Division. In addition to her administrative duties, she enjoys maintaining her clinical practice.
Emphasis on family
Dr. Thompson specializes in women’s health and chronic disease management, including the effects of stress on women’s overall health. She also works with adolescents (boys and girls), often her adult patients’ children – with a focus on teen mental health challenges.
As a mother to two high school-aged children -- a son and daughter -- she feels a closeness with teens and understands their anxieties. “I find it very rewarding to help them make the transition during that stage in life,” she says. “I really like taking care of the whole family. Sometimes I get dads and grandparents, too, all from the same family.”
Personalized patient care
When first meeting a patient, Dr. Thompson will ask about their health concerns that day. “I like letting the patient tell me their wellness goals, then I will ask questions to determine what their healthcare plan should be.” She is culturally sensitive in developing the healthcare plan and keeps personal preferences in mind.
“I want the wellness plan to be a collaborative effort, so they leave with a plan they will follow,” says Dr. Thompson. “This may include lifestyle changes or it may be a maintenance plan, whatever the patient needs for good health.”
Helping patients resume their lives
Dr. Thompson wants her patients to feel empowered to make lifestyle changes. “I listen a lot, so we can find common ground,” she says. “We want a plan that meets goals that are attainable. And I don’t want the patient to feel I’m dictating the plan. It’s important that this be a collaborative effort.”
Being approachable, listening carefully -- those are Dr. Thompson’s primary goals in her interactions with patients. “I want a good relationship with my patients, trusting,” she says. “And even if I’m taking care of multiple members of the same family, there will be the highest level of confidentiality.”
While she doesn’t provide mental health counseling, Dr. Thompson will listen carefully, provide professional guidance, and help patients get help from a specialist, if necessary. “I will smooth the transition with that specialist, so they get the care they need. I really care about my patients and want them to get the best care possible.”
