Lung Screening and
Nodule Program

Early Detection Can Find Lung Cancer When It’s Most Treatable

If you’re a current or former smoker, a 15-minute CT lung screening may save your life. The screening uses low-dose computed tomography (CT) to detect lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage.

The Emory Healthcare Lung Screening and Nodule Program offers CT lung screenings at several locations throughout metro Atlanta.

What is CT Lung Screening?

Lung cancer causes more deaths each year than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined. CT lung screenings help catch cancer early. The screening identifies nodules (abnormal growths) within the lungs that may be early signs of lung cancer. These nodules are often present before a person has physical symptoms of lung cancer.

During the scan, you lie on an exam table while a CT machine takes detailed images of your lungs. The scan is not painful and only takes a few minutes.

Talk to Your Doctor about CT Lung Screening

A doctor’s referral is required for the screening. If you don’t have a doctor, call the Emory Lung Screening and Nodule Program at 404-686-5864.

A care coordinator will explain what the screening involves. They’ll also ask questions to see if you’re eligible. If you are, the coordinator will schedule a screening at a convenient time and location.

Are You Eligible for CT Lung Screening?

CT lung screening is only recommended for people who are at high risk of developing lung cancer due to their age and smoking history. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends an annual CT lung screening for lung cancer.

You may be eligible for an annual CT lung screening if you meet all the following criteria:

  • You are between 50 and 80 years old.
  • You currently smoke or used to smoke (quit date must be within the last 15 years).
  • You smoked an average of at least one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years.
  • You don’t have a health condition that would keep you from safely having surgery if needed.

Answers to Common Questions about Lung Cancer Screening
  • CT lung screening is effective: it provides more detailed information than a regular chest X-ray, allowing our team to diagnose lung cancer in the early stages when it’s easier to treat. A CT lung screening is a noninvasive procedure. It does deliver a small dose of radiation to your body; however, it is a smaller amount of radiation as compared to a regular CT scan.
  • A CT scanner is an “open,” circular machine.

    • Your technologist will position you on the exam table. You’ll need to lie flat on your back with your arms raised beside your head for a short time (usually less than 5 minutes).
    • Once you’re in position, the technologist will leave the room to operate the CT scanner.
    • During the scan, the exam table will move in and out of the scanner. The technologist will ask you to follow simple breathing instructions, such as holding your breath.
    • Your technologist and the CT staff will be able to see you and communicate with you through an intercom.
    • After the scanner captures all the images, the technologist will return to the room to assist you and provide next steps.
  • Your results will appear in your MyChart patient portal within three to five days of your scan. We will share your results with your doctor as well.

One of our care team members will call you to discuss your results and explain what happens next. If you have any questions before or after you see your results, you are welcome to call us at 404-686-5864.

  • The Lung Screening and Nodule Clinic care team will review your results. If you have nodules, the team will discuss what type of testing and treatment you need next. You may need to see one of the specialists within our care team for further testing or treatment.

Your care team will work with you to create a clear path forward, including answering your questions and providing referrals and resources. You can call them any time for information or support.

  • It is recommended that you continue with annual CT lung screening to watch for new changes. You will be reminded when it is time for your CT lung screening.
  • Quitting smoking now greatly reduces your risk of lung cancer and improves your overall health. The American Lung Association offers resources to help you quit. The Freedom From Smoking® program provides a personalized plan of action and the support you need to remain tobacco-free for life. Learn more.
