Head & Neck Cancer Conditions

Cancers of the head and neck are further categorized by the area of the head or neck in which they begin. These areas can include oral cavity, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), paranasal sinuses & nasal cavity and salivary glands. The symptoms of head and neck cancers may include a lump or a sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, difficulty in swallowing and a change or hoarseness in the voice. These symptoms may also be caused by other, less serious conditions.

Neck Cysts

Congenital head and neck masses are lumps (cysts) in the neck, face, scalp or ear. Many of these should be removed to prevent infection. The most common congenital head and neck masses are dermoid cysts, branchial cleft cysts and thyroglossal duct cysts.

  • Dermoid cysts are usually found on the scalp, face, or neck and need to be removed because they can grow larger or become infected.
  • Branchial cleft cysts develop in the neck of young children and are surgically removed to prevent infection.
  • Thyroglossal duct cysts are lumps in the middle of the neck near the Adam’s apple or under the chin. Removal is typically required to prevent infection.

Nose and Sinus Conditions

Nose and sinus conditions can range from seasonal allergies to more complex issues like chronic sinusitis, which may be brought on by an infection, growths in the sinuses (nasal polyps) or inflammation of the lining of your sinuses. Other conditions that impair breathing, such as a deviated septum, can be treated to help improve the proper function of the nose.

Receive a comprehensive evaluation and treatment for a variety of conditions of the nose and sinuses at the Sinus, Nasal and Allergy Center.

Salivary Gland Conditions

Salivary glands produce saliva to moisten the mouth, help protect teeth from decay and aide in the digestion of food. There are three major salivary glands in the mouth: the parotid, ubmandibular, and sublingual glands. The saliva produced by these glands drain into the mouth through small ducts, and when these ducts become blocked, the saliva cannot drain. If simple measures don’t relieve the problem, surgery may be required to remove the blockage and/or the affected gland.

Skull Base Conditions

The skull base includes structures of the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossa. These regions may be involved by disease originating intracranially, within the bone of the skull base itself, and extracranially, outside of the cranium (bones that surround the brain).

We offer comprehensive treatment for anterior, lateral and posterior cranial base lesions, treatment of vascular anomalies, extirpation of benign and malignant tumors and infections, management of craniofacial trauma, repair of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leaks and the repair of complex facial trauma.

Sleep Disorders

Snoring is harsh, noisy, rattling breathing caused by an improper inflow and air outflow while sleeping. When falling asleep, the throat muscles relax, the tongue slips backward, and the throat narrows. If anything is obstructing the free flow of air at the back of your mouth and nose—a sinus infection, a nasal polyp, etc.—it can intensify the narrowing of your airway. This leads to vibrations in the loose throat muscles, causing the snoring sound.

In the worst cases, snoring can signal a serious condition such as obstructive sleep apnea, a condition linked to cardiac problems that can be fatal if left untreated. Snoring is a problem to discuss with your doctor, as is anything that interferes with a good night’s sleep.

Our expertise and focus on the voice and upper airway ensure you have access to the best care and most recent techniques.
