Kai Mentzer has been named interim chief operating officer (COO) of Emory Hospitals Warner Robins and Perry, effective Jan. 1, 2027. Mentzer will shift into the role as Kevin Splaine, chief executive officer (CEO) of Emory Hospitals Warner Robins and Perry, steps down from his position on Dec. 31, 2026, citing personal and family reasons.
Mentzer will lead both Houston County hospitals and its outpatient clinics with the same scope and accountability as Splaine, overseeing the day-to-day operations at the facilities. The title change from CEO to COO aligns the role with titles used across other Emory Healthcare entities.Mentzer brings 20 years of leadership experience across federal and military healthcare systems. Recently, he served as CEO of the Atlanta VA Healthcare System, the largest healthcare system in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. There he oversaw three hospitals, 19 clinics and 5,500 employees serving patients across 52 counties. He also held leadership roles in VA Medical Centers in Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida and Arizona. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army for more than four years in active duty and four additional years in active ready reserve.
“Throughout his career, Kai has led complex organizations through operational transformation, quality improvement and strategic growth,” says Heather Dexter, president of the Hospital Division at Emory Healthcare. “He provides deep focus on improving the patient experience and building high-performing teams. We look forward to Kai’s arrival in Warner Robins and Perry.”
“I am excited for the opportunity to join Emory Hospitals Warner Robins and Perry, two well-positioned institutions in Houston County, which bring advanced care closer to home in our community,” says Mentzer. “Working with a talented care team in Middle Georgia, we will remain focused on expanding access and services, elevating the patient experience and investing in the people who care for our patients.”
Splaine, who has made significant contributions during his time at Emory Healthcare, will continue to lead the hospitals during this transition period to ensure a seamless handoff to Mentzer.
“Kevin has been instrumental during the 2025 integration of two Houston County Hospitals into the Emory Healthcare system,” says Dexter. “We are grateful to Kevin for his leadership and for the strong foundation he and the Warner Robins and Perry teams have built.”
