D. Austin Schirmer, MD, is an Assistant Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. His interest in treating patients with infertility and other reproductive disorders began early in his career while he was still a medical student, and he finds the process of helping patients to build their families to be very rewarding. He specializes in treating patients with infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and reproductive endocrine disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. He also sees patients who are interested in preserving their fertility, either for social reasons or prior to undergoing medical treatments that may adversely affect fertility (such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy).
Dr. Schirmer completed his residency and fellowship training at Emory University Hospital prior to joining the Emory faculty. He has served as a guest researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he completed research related to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome and assisted with other projects related to public health and infertility. He has also published research with the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta AFLAC fertility team related to fertility in survivors of pediatric cancer. Dr. Schirmer has a passion for teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and has been recognized for this by the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Emory University School of Medicine on many occassions.
Dr. Schirmer grew up and attended medical school in Connecticut and moved to Atlanta when he began his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He enjoys skiing, biking, golf and spending time with his wife and children.
