About

Dr. Joshua Appel, MD, MSc, FRCSC, is a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Colorectal Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery training at the University of Toronto, ranked the #2 hospital in the world. During his time there he also earned a Master of Science in System Leadership, Innovation and Design through the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is Board-Certified in General Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He then went on to complete his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, an esteemed and historic Colorectal Surgery division and the birth place of Crohn’s disease.​ Dr. Appel’s clinical focus includes the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus, with a particular focus on minimally invasive, laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal approaches to colorectal surgery. His areas of interest encompass inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, and pelvic floor and anorectal disorders, including anal fissures, fistulas, and hemorrhoids, as well as colon, rectal, and anal cancers. His academic work has included presentations and publications on robotic and transanal techniques, inflammatory bowel disease, ileal-anal pouch (IPAA) outcomes, parastomal hernia repair, and complex fistula repair. Dr. Appel is an active member of several national and international surgical societies including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and Canadian Association of General Surgeons. His broader interests include improving surgical outcomes, integrating innovation into colorectal surgery, and providing thoughtful, compassionate care tailored to each of his patient’s needs.​
