Anatomic Pathology Testing

More than 40 full-time faculty and staff pathologists support surgical pathology and cytopathology services across multiple Emory Healthcare locations. These pathologists provide for the diagnostic study of patient tissue and cells in support of optimal clinical outcomes. Faculty pathologists are also involved with resident and fellow training and are actively involved with numerous academic research endeavors.

To learn more about faculty members in the department of pathology, visit the Emory University School of Medicine. For questions or support, please call 404-712-5947.

  • Surgical pathology is supported by robust histology services that include the use of rapid tissue processors for same-day processing of specified tissue samples, automated microtomy and the use of Lean programming for quality assurance and operational efficiency. Surgical pathology is also supported by an expanding digital pathology program.

Surgical pathology is comprised of subspecialties led by designated senior pathologists, which include:

    • Autopsy Pathology, which includes forensic and perinatal pathology
    • Breast Pathology
    • Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology
    • Cardiac Pathology
    • Dermatopathology
    • Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Pathology
    • Genitourinary Pathology
    • Gynecologic Pathology
    • Head and Neck Pathology
    • Hematopathology
    • Neuropathology
    • Pulmonary Pathology
    • Renal Pathology
    • Transplant Pathology
  • Cytopathologists, general pathologists and cytotechnologists work together to evaluate cells that have been exfoliated spontaneously or have been removed from tissues through various means. Specimen types included in this service are body fluids associated with known disease processes, representative cells obtained from the cervix (Pap tests) and fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAs) of breast, lung, thyroid, etc., collected through CT-guided, endoscopic ultrasound-guided (EUS) and endobronchial ultrasound-guided (EBUS) procedures.

    Testing methodologies include:

    • Gynecologic high-risk HPV testing
    • Non-gynecologic cytopathology testing
    • SurePath® Pap testing
    • ThinPrep® Pap testing
  • Advanced testing methodologies offered by our team include:

    • FISH testing on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material
    • Immunofluorescence staining associated with kidney biopsy assessment
    • Immunohistochemistry staining with a catalogue of more than 200 antibodies
  • Expert pathology consultations are offered by our faculty pathologists. Steps for requesting consultation are as follows:

    • Complete the Pathology Consultation Request Form
    • Submit glass microscopic slides, either stained or unstained. Paraffin blocks may be submitted for special studies if required (these will be requested as needed if not included with initial submission)
    • Provide a copy of the referring pathologist's final report or at least preliminary diagnosis. If the case has been previously reviewed by other consultants, copies of those reports should also be included.
    • Provide a letter from the referring physician or pathologist which includes patient demographics to positively identify the patient and associated pathology materials. Materials (slides and/or blocks) and the tissue source should be identifiable by the originating institution’s accession number, also included in the letter.
Click on the link above to open a PDF of the consultation form.

Pathology materials submitted for Expert Consult services must be packaged properly to avoid damage during shipping. Emory Healthcare recommends:

    • Glass slides should be enclosed in plastic slide boxes designed specifically for slide transport (available in most laboratories).
    • Any excess space in the slide box under the lid should be filled with bubble-wrap or cotton gauze to avoid breakage due to shaking/movement during transport.
    • The lid of the slide box should be taped closed to prevent loss or breakage of glass slides.
    • Slide boxes should be surrounded by bubble-wrap and placed in a rigid mailing that has been filled with padding such as gauze or Styrofoam or placed in a padded commercial-grade envelope. All associated paperwork should be included in the same shipping container/padded commercial-grade envelope so that materials, request form and letter are all received together.
    • Materials shipped via standard postal service, UPS or Fed-Ex or other commercial shipping companies are accepted.
    • Shipping containers should contain a return address to avoid pathology material loss should problems arise with transport.
    • Shipping containers should be addressed to:
        Emory University Hospital
Anatomic Pathology – Expert Consult Service
        1364 Clifton Road NE
        Room G180
        Atlanta, Georgia 30322
