GI Endoscopy Services

Types of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Procedures

At Emory Healthcare, we prioritize your health and well-being. Our experienced team provides compassionate care and advanced screening options, including gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy procedures to screen for and manage gastrointestinal conditions like acid reflux, colon polyps, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer and others. We offer several diagnostic and therapeutic GI endoscopy procedures.

Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Procedures

  • A diagnostic test that measures the strength and coordination of the anal and rectal muscles to evaluate conditions like chronic constipation, fecal incontinence or defecation disorders.
  • Non-invasive tests that analyze hydrogen and methane levels in the breath after ingesting a sugar solution to detect small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO).
  • An endoscopic procedure using a flexible tube with a camera to examine the entire colon and rectum, often used to screen for colorectal cancer, investigate gastrointestinal symptoms or remove polyps.

  • An endoscopic procedure using a flexible tube with a camera that allows direct visualization of the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestine to identify inflammation, ulcers or tumors.
  • A test that measures the rhythmic muscle contractions of the esophagus when swallowing, helping to diagnose motility disorders like achalasia, esophageal spasms, or esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EJGOO).
  • A minimally invasive procedure using a flexible tube with a camera that examines the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon and rectum) to detect inflammation, polyps or cancer.
  • An imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the rectum and surrounding tissues to detect abnormalities in the rectum (inflammation, polyps, or tumors).
  • A procedure that uses a long, flexible endoscope to examine and sometimes treat conditions in the small intestine that are beyond the reach of standard upper endoscopy.
  • A diagnostic technique where a patient swallows a small, pill-sized camera that captures images of the small intestine to detect bleeding, inflammation or tumors.
  • A special procedure in which a balloon shaped device is used to detect pressure, shape and distention of your esophagus. It gives real-time information on how your digestive muscles are working and relaxing.
  • A tiny wireless sensor is placed during an endoscopy to measure acid levels within your esophagus. This sensor wirelessly transmits information to a recorder. This device helps determine whether your symptoms are related to reflux disease.

Gastrointestinal Therapeutic Procedures

  • A specialized endoscopic procedure that uses two balloons to advance a long scope deep into the small intestine, allowing for diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities such as bleeding or tumors.
  • A minimally invasive technique used to remove precancerous or early-stage cancerous lesions from the lining of the digestive tract, typically in the esophagus, stomach or colon.
  • A combined endoscopic and fluoroscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts, such as stones or tumors.
  • A special procedure performed during an ERCP. A small scope is passed through another endoscope. This procedure allows direct visualization of bile ducts, destruction of bile duct stones and tissue sampling.
  • An advanced endoscopic technique that allows for the full removal of larger or deeper gastrointestinal lesions, often used for early cancers in the stomach, esophagus or colon.
  • A procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs, often used to evaluate tumors, cysts or lymph nodes. In addition to helping providers evaluate those areas, it can also be used to treat certain conditions.
  • A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat gastroparesis by cutting the pyloric muscle to improve gastric emptying.
  • An endoscopic procedure using a flexible tube with a light and camera to evaluate the ileum (last part of the small intestine) through a stoma. Used to assess for inflammation, ulcers or other abnormalities.
  • A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat achalasia and other esophageal motility disorders by cutting the inner muscle layer of the esophagus to relieve swallowing difficulties.
  • A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat an obstruction in the digestive tract. An endoscope is used to place a stent, which is a mesh-like metal tube, in a narrowed or obstructed portion of the digestive tract.
