Foot & Ankle Treatments

Emory is a one-stop shop for the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of all problems of the foot and ankle, with both surgical and non-surgical treatment provided by the nation's foremost specialists in foot and ankle orthopaedics.

Your feet and ankles are the daily bearers of your body's full weight. Consequently, the tremendous demands we put on our feet are sometimes more than they can bear. The Achilles tendon can tear or rupture, ankles can sprain or lose their cartilage, or the joint could be come arthritic. Recent advances in foot and ankle surgery have greatly enhanced Emory's ability to treat these problems.

Some of the foot and ankle conditions our orthopedic doctors treat include:

Achilles Tendon Repair

When the tendon tears or ruptures, a variety of surgical techniques are available to repair the damage and restore the tendon's function. All involve operating through a small incision to repair or reattach the tendon. The precise manner in which the tendon is repaired is chosen based on various biomechanical advantages offered by each.

Ankle Fusion (Arthrodesis)

Ankle fusion is suitable for young or very active individuals with bad ankle damage. For those patients with severe arthritis or joint damage, ankle fusion can be a reliable solution for pain relief and improving function.

Brostrom-Gould Reconstruction

Brostrom-Gould Reconstruction restores ankle stability by repairing the lateral (outside) ligaments of the ankle.

Bunion/Hammertoe Correction

This procedure aligns the first ("big") toe and, if needed, straightens the second through fourth toes. This treats the pain of bunions and hammertoes, and is designed to prevent the condition from returning.

Cartilage Repair

Though lost cartilage cannot yet be replaced, advances in recent decades have led to more effective techniques for repairing damaged cartilage.

Orthotics

Orthotics are customized insoles that correct and improve the way your feet strike the ground. Orthotics can reduce the biomechanical strain on your feet and body. They can also relieve alignment problems that lead to foot, ankle, leg, hip, and lower back pain.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy utilizes platelets from the athletes' own blood to rebuild a damaged tendon.

Total Ankle Replacement Surgery

In this procedure, a badly damaged ankle is completely replaced with an ankle taken from the cadaver of a donor. Because the damaged ankle is completely removed, total ankle replacement can resolve a wide variety of serious ankle problems.
