Dr. Joel Zivot

Joel Zivot, MD, FRCP(C)

Joel Zivot, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine, is the Medical Director of the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Emory University Hospital.  Dr. Zivot, an anesthesiologist and intensivist with expertise in cardiothoracic critical care, manages some of the hospital's most critically ill patients during and following cardiac and thoracic surgery.  He divides his time between the operating room serving as an anesthesiologist for cardiothoracic patients undergoing surgery, and the ICU directly caring for patients recovering from surgery.  Dr. Zivot is boarded in anesthesiology from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and The American Board of Anesthesiology, and in Critical Care Medicine from the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Zivot comes to Emory from the University of Manitoba in Western Canada, where he served as medical director of the Intensive Care Cardiac Sciences Program.  Prior to that, he was the medical director of the Cardiothoracic ICU at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.  He also worked at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI where he trained future doctors in critical care medicine as the director of fellowship programs at both institutions.  Dr. Zivot's interest in supply chain management arose out of work done on the ethical considerations of drug shortages. Dr. Zivot is an associate faculty member at the Emory Center for Ethics and has collaborated with experts in all aspects of the drug supply chain.
