When your Emory Clinic doctor orders a lab test to help diagnose your condition or plan your treatment, he or she depends on the expertise of Emory Medical Laboratory (EML) pathologists and lab technologists. Pathology professionals examine tissues under a microscope and perform different types of testing and analysis to help your doctor develop a customized treatment for you.

Pathology lab professionals are important members of your care team, with expertise you can trust. EML is a CLIA certified, CAP accredited clinical laboratory and is one of the largest, most comprehensive medical laboratories in Georgia. Lab personnel perform more than five million lab tests every year, using the latest techniques and equipment. We’re experienced at performing and analyzing everything from routine blood tests to complex analysis for organ transplantation, cancer treatment and more.

Commitment to a healthier future

Medical oversight of EML, is performed by faculty members in the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. This department is staffed by more than 500 faculty and staff members. Faculty members perform clinical service, teach medical students and residents and run active research laboratories.

Many of the diagnostic tests doctors use today were discovered through basic research in the lab. Emory researchers continue to seek better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease through ongoing research — studies to improve care today and in the future.
