Low Vision Rehabilitation Treatments

The Low Vision Rehabilitation Clinic offers a variety of treatments for people of any age who have only partial sight due to cataracts, glaucomamacular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, detached retina or stroke.

  • This innovative device may help if you have end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We implant the device in one eye. Then, you have rehabilitation training to learn how to use the device. As with any surgery, risks and results may vary. To better determine if you are a candidate for an implantable miniature telescope, call Samsara Vision at 1-877-99-SIGHT (1-877-997-4448).
  • Cortical reorganization is a type of brain training for people with AMD. It helps you figure out new ways to see better. Your care team will guide you through steps to help your brain adapt to vision changes. Cortical reorganization is not invasive.
  • Bioptic telescope lenses work like a super precise self-focusing camera. It magnifies distant images to four times normal size and close-up objects to five times normal size. Light and portable, you can wear bioptic telescope lenses on a standard pair of glasses. It takes time to adjust to seeing with bioptic lenses. You may need special training to drive with them.
  • Digital viewing system

A digital viewing system is a portable, self-focusing augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) system. You can use it for distance and close-up vision. The system magnifies images up to 30 times the normal size. You wear it like a VR helmet to view magnified images on a small screen in front of each eye. You can also use it to see magnified images of a book or newspaper on a standard TV screen. VR headsets may cause dizziness and disorientation at first. Sit down while you wear it to help keep you safe from falling.

    Electronic magnifier systems

Many electronic portable devices improve vision for distance and for reading. Thanks to the latest technology, these magnifier systems produce crisp and focused images. Your care team will talk with you about your options and help you pick the best electronic magnifier system for you.

Low vision is vision loss that you can’t correct with glasses, contacts or surgery. We offer innovative care for low vision for people of all ages.
