Pediatric Ophthalmology

Advanced Treatment for Eye Conditions in Kids

If your child has an eye condition or there is concern for an eye condition, you can count on the pediatric ophthalmologists at Emory Eye Center. Our experts treat common vision problems and complex childhood eye diseases and disorders.

We partner with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Arthur M. Blank Hospital for children needing follow-up hospital care, multispecialty care, or surgical care to ensure that your child receives the best care—whether it is for strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), cataract surgery, or a childhood eye tumor.

Eye Care for Children

Our fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologists treat a wide range of pediatric eye conditions, including:

Your child's treatment will vary based on his or her diagnosis, but may include:

  • Eye patching, glasses, contact lenses, assistive devices
  • Medications, including drops, gels or ointments
  • Surgery, including laser surgery
  • Referral to other subspecialists for low vision resources

Our pediatric ophthalmology team also works closely with other pediatric eye specialists at Emory. With our oculoplastic surgery team, we treat droopy eyelids (ptosis), tear duct obstruction, and tumors. We partner with Emory Eye Center retina specialists to treat retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma, development disorders affecting retinal blood vessels and uveitis in children.

Care for Adults with Eye Misalignment (Strabismus)

Because strabismus is more common in children, pediatric ophthalmologists often treat adults with the same condition. Our pediatric ophthalmology team has special expertise in adult strabismus care. We offer treatments to relieve symptoms of eye misalignment, like double vision and depth-perception problems.

Treatments may include:

  • Glasses with prism lenses to help with eye movement or alignment problems
  • Refractive correction (standard treatment for nearsightedness and farsightedness) with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery
  • Eye muscle surgery
Georgia Lions Partnership

Good vision is essential for proper development. To care for all children—from diagnosis and treatment—we’ve partnered with Georgia Lions to create the Georgia Lions Children’s Eye Care Center. Our doctors focus on diagnosing and treating childhood eye diseases early, before they lead to vision loss.

Funding from the Georgia Lions has supported several important initiatives.

  • Many families face financial issues that prevent them from seeking or receiving health care. Our team works with families facing poverty, inadequate insurance or lack of transportation. We ensure they get the vision treatment and follow-up care needed to prevent blindness.
  • It’s hard for kids to sit still, especially during medical procedures. Emory Eye Center specialists have found a better way to treat pediatric glaucoma. Our team developed new tools and modified the standard techniques. Now, children need one surgery, not three. This approach reduces the likelihood of scar tissue development and nearsightedness.
  • Our pediatric ophthalmology team is involved in many eye disorder clinical trials, including collaborations with Children’s Hospital of Atlanta and the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group. Ask your doctor about any specific questions you may have about opportunities to become a participant in a research investigation.
Emory Eye Center pediatric ophthalmologists care for children with vision problems and eye disease, including glaucoma—a leading cause of blindness.
