Why Screenings Matter: Early Detection and Preventive Care at Emory Healthcare

Getting regular health screenings is one of the most important ways to protect your health.

At Emory Healthcare, we offer a wide range of screenings to catch conditions like cancer or heart disease early—often before you notice any symptoms. Early detection means you can act sooner and get the care you need to stay well.

Emory primary care providers help you with ongoing care to maintain your health. They’re your first contact for early detection of conditions and can coordinate advanced specialty care if you need it.

If you don’t have a primary care doctor, please call  404-778-7777 to speak with an Emory Healthcare professional who can help you find the right doctor for your needs.

What to Expect During Your Visit
Each screening is different. Your doctor will give you specific instructions for the test you’re having. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown. Some general information can be found below.
  • This is a one-time screening for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Doctors recommend it for men 65 to 75 years old who have smoked.

The AAA ultrasound is painless, noninvasive and risk-free. It typically takes about 15 minutes.

You'll lie on a padded exam table and your technologist will apply gel to the skin on your belly. They will move a handheld device (transducer) over the area to take pictures.

  • DEXA is for postmenopausal women, older adults or people at risk of osteoporosis. It detects low bone density.

A DEXA scan checks for low bone density and helps find signs of osteoporosis. You’ll lie on a padded exam table while a scanner takes pictures of your spine and hips. The test is painless, takes 10 to 30 minutes, and just requires you to stay still and briefly hold your breath during images.

  • A CT colonoscopy is a noninvasive test for adults 50 and older to check for colorectal cancer.

Before the exam, you’ll follow special instructions to clean out your bowels. During the scan, you’ll lie on a padded exam table while a small tube gently inflates your colon with air. The scanner takes detailed images as the table moves.

The test is quick, doesn’t require sedation and usually takes about 15 minutes.

  • This heart scan is for adults ages 40 to 75 who may be at higher risk for heart disease.

You’ll lie on a padded exam table while small stickers (electrodes) are placed on your chest to time the images with your heartbeat. The scan is painless and takes 10 to 15 minutes. You may need to hold your breath briefly during pictures.

  • If you’re between 55 and 80 and have a history of heavy smoking, your doctor may recommend a lung CT scan.

Emory’s Lung CT Screening Program uses low-dose radiation to reduce risk. You’ll lie on a padded exam table that moves through a scanner while images are taken. The test is quick, noninvasive and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Doctors recommend women over 40 get a mammogram every year to screen for breast cancer. Those with higher risk factors may need to start earlier or screen more often.

We use advanced 3D technology for clear, accurate results. During the test, you’ll wear a gown and stand in front of a mammography machine. Each breast is gently compressed to take images.
