Fellowship Structure
Rotational Tracks
The Administrative Fellowship Program’s goal is to provide future healthcare executives with opportunities to gain an in-depth understanding of hospital and clinic-based operations in an academic medical center environment. To achieve this, each fellow will have the opportunity to select designated rotations that align with their current expertise, the business needs of the organization, and the aspirations of the fellow.
These tracks include:- Clinical
- Finance/Revenue Cycle
- Administrative/Operations
- Innovation & Strategy
- Quality & Patient Safety
- Digital
Year 1 - To provide fellows with a foundational knowledge of the health system, Year 1 of the program will consist of 3 rotations. These rotations will be catered to the fellow’s track. The fellows will have a preceptor for each rotation, ensuring ample support. In addition, having multiple preceptors will provide maximum exposure to system level leadership.
Year 2 - The second year of the Administrative Fellowship will consist of 2 rotations that are project focused. The purpose of these rotations are to grow depth of knowledge in the fellows chosen area of interest and expertise. Similar to the first year, the fellow will have a preceptor for each of these rotations during their 2nd year.
Graduation - Upon graduation from the 2-year Fellowship Program, fellows are guaranteed a full-time role with Emory Healthcare assuming satisfactory performance.
Preceptor Relationships
Administrative fellows have the unique opportunity to engage with several senior leaders across the enterprise. As a way of furthering these conversations and mentoring relationships, fellows are assigned preceptors based on their tracks and rotations. Preceptors are chosen for the Fellowship Program based on their demonstrated commitment to the fellowship and provide career development guidance.
Mentorships
Along with a dedicated preceptor for each rotation, fellows will also be assigned a mentor for the entire two years. These mentors are paired based on the individual fellow’s interest areas, background, and intended career path. These mentors can range from previous fellows in leadership positions throughout the organization all the way up to senior system leaders. These mentors will serve as both coaches and advisors throughout the fellows’ time in the program, maximizing development and forming strong connections.
Fellowship Program Overview
Program Components
Orientation - During the first few weeks of the program, fellows participate in informational interviews with Emory Healthcare's senior leadership team.
Committee Meetings - Fellows rotate among key committees to gain a broad background and understanding of Emory Healthcare. By observing leaders, fellows gain awareness of various decision-making processes and challenges facing today's executives.
Clinical Shadowing - Fellows have the opportunity to rotate through various clinical departments within the hospitals and clinics at EHC. The clinical rotations are intended to give fellows exposure to working with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff, as well as an opportunity to observe frontline procedures and patient care. These are scheduled at the fellows' discretion.
Senior Leadership Meetings - Fellows meet on a regular basis with Emory Healthcare senior executives to discuss fellowship progress, professional development opportunities, and current healthcare issues.
Professional Development - Every quarter, the fellowship will offer professional development opportunities to gain further insight into specific topics catered specifically for administrative fellows. Along with this, the program offers several different leadership roles within the fellowship including Chief Fellow, Communication Chair, Alumni Chair, and Internship Coordinator.

William A. Bornstein, MD, Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer, Emory Healthcare
"The Emory Healthcare Administrative Fellowship Program provides an incomparable opportunity for fellows to get hands-on leadership experience in a complex, integrated delivery system and top tier academic medical center. A major part of the learning is achieved through doing projects, which contribute immensely to the professional development of the fellow and to the quality of care we deliver."
Donald Brunn, Senior Vice President, Network Development, Emory Healthcare
"The experience helps each fellow make a better career choice for the all-important "first job" decision."
Patrick Hammond, Chief Executive Officer, Emory Healthcare Network and Chief Market Services Officer, Emory Healthcare
"As a 14-year employee of Emory Healthcare, I have personally experienced the value of Emory Healthcare's Administrative Fellowship Program both as a young graduate with little to no work experience and as a hiring executive director. I started my health care career as an administrative resident at Emory Crawford Long Hospital. That experience continues to be a tremendous asset to me today because it provided broad exposure to all aspects of the health care delivery system that only an integrated delivery system like Emory Healthcare can provide."
