The area will be chosen collectively based upon the resident’s interests and departmental needs.

Research project: Residents design, develop and complete an original research project, including a final manuscript of research results. To expand their understanding of and compliance with research requirements, residents complete an Emory IRB (Institutional Review Board)-certified module. Residents present their project at the Southeastern Residency Conference in April or ASHP Summer Meeting in June of their residency year.

Quality improvement project: Residents complete a quality improvement project with a goal to improve patient care at EUHM. Residents collect and analyze data, prepare a handout and present the project to a committee as designated by the RPD in conjunction with the preceptor.

Grand Rounds presentation: Residents prepare a 60-minute presentation for ACPE credit on approved topics.

Staffing: Residents gain experience in the pharmacy’s medication distribution system by staffing one operational area and one clinical area regularly, including some holidays. On call: PGY-1 HSPAL residents participate in inpatient and specialty resident on-call rotation with all EUHM residents. PGY-2 HSPAL residents participate in inpatient manager-on-call and resident on-call rotations.

Teaching: In addition to providing in-services while on rotations, residents may assist in precepting fourth-year pharmacy students from the Mercer Southern School of Pharmacy and University of Georgia. Residents participate as primary preceptors for the introductory pharmacy practice experience for third-year pharmacy students from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and Mercer University College of Pharmacy. Additionally, residents may complete a pharmacy teaching certificate program offered by Mercer University College of Pharmacy and receive the title of "Adjunct Clinical Instructor."

Residency leadership series: The PGY2 HSPAL resident leads a leadership topic series for all pharmacy leaders across Emory Healthcare

HSPAL seminar: Residents can participate in a seminar series to gain further knowledge and experience in core knowledge and competency areas, including topics such as strategic planning, data analytics, lean methodology and quality improvement.
