Jaw Deformity Surgery

What Is a Jaw Deformity?

A jaw deformity occurs when the upper and or lower jaw is too small or too big. This results in the teeth not coming together properly and difficulties with eating and speech. Some people with jaw deformity also have jaw pain and a facial appearance that is not harmonious.

Your jaw deformity may be due to one or more of the following

  • Upper jaw has inadequate or excessive in size
  • Lower jaw is inadequate or excessive in size
  • Chin is inadequate or excessive in size

This may result in one or more of the following

  • Inability to chew and bite
  • Difficulty with speech and making certain sounds
  • Teeth not coming together properly
  • A change in your facial appearance.

Your doctor will examine you to determine exactly where the jaw deformities are.

Jaw Deformity Surgery

You may need jaw deformity surgery to correct the jaw position and the way your teeth come together. Treatments we offer include:

  • Upper jaw repositioning. We separate the upper jaw from the face and molve it to the ideal position and secure it with small metal plates and screws.
  • Lower jaw repositioning. We gently break the lower jaw and move it to the ideal position and secure it with small metal plates and screws.
  • Chin repositioning. We divide the chin bone and move it forward. This creates more space for your tongue, opens the airway and stabilizes your jaw and mouth.
