Dystonia Treatments

Comprehensive Dystonia Care

It can be difficult to live with dystonia. The condition, which causes uncontrolled muscle movements, can make it hard to speak, write, walk, and more. Many people with dystonia live in pain as well.

Neurologists in the Movement Disorders Program, part of the Emory Brain Health Center, are here to help. We offer a full range of dystonia treatments that can help improve your quality of life and provide greater comfort.

Dystonia Treatments Can Help You Live More Fully

There is no cure for dystonia. But we can help you manage it. With the right help, you can live life on your terms and do the things you need and want to do.

Doctors carefully evaluate your condition to decide which treatment is best for you. They may recommend one or more of these therapies:

  • Botulinum toxin injections may block muscle spasms. This is the main treatment for adult-onset dystonia that affects one area of the body. It may improve symptoms for two to four months. Then, doctors must repeat the treatment. Long-term treatment is safe.
  • Medication can affect chemicals in your brain that have a role in muscle movement. Medicine can also help relax your muscles.
  • Psychiatric services may help if your dystonia makes you feel anxious or depressed. Mental health care makes it easier for some people to move forward.
  • Rehabilitation services may improve your symptoms and make it easier to function. For example, physical therapy can help strengthen your muscles. If your condition makes you unsteady, your rehabilitation could involve balance treatment.
  • Deep brain stimulation is a surgical treatment for severe dystonia. It involves planting an electrical device in your brain to change the abnormal signals your muscles receive. We offer the treatment through the Emory Functional Neurosurgery Program.

What is Dystonia?

Your muscles usually move only when you want them to. But when you have dystonia, your muscles can contract on their own. This neurological condition can make it hard to do everyday tasks.
