Movement Disorder Treatments

Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders

Currently, there aren’t cures for Parkinson’s disease (PD) or other movement disorders. But treatments can help you manage your symptoms and maintain your quality of life.

Our Movement Disorders Program is a part of the Emory Brain Health Center. Our team leads clinical trials to develop new ways to treat movement disorders.

Emory is also a Center of Excellence in Parkinson’s disease care. We offer a Comprehensive Care Clinic for PD patients and progressive deep brain stimulation.

SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd

Emory offers a special speech therapy program for people with Parkinson’s disease. SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd can improve their voicing, and in turn, their swallowing.

The SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd therapy regimens were developed at Parkinson Voice Project in Richardson, TX. Learn more by visiting their website.

SPEAK OUT! is offered Monday through Thursday at the following location:

Emory Brain Health Center
Neurorehabilitation Clinic
12 Executive Park
Suite 470

Expert Neurosurgery Care

Emory is a leader in innovative surgeries for Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders. Our neurosurgeons  are nationally recognized for their skill and dedication to their patients.

Surgical treatments for movement disorders include:

  • We were one of the first hospitals to implement deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat tremor disorders.

DBS is like a pacemaker for your brain. We place thin wires into your brain. A generator in your chest sends pulses through these electrodes. The electrodes normalize your brain activity. This treatment helps improve your symptoms.

  • Emory Healthcare is one of only a select number of locations in the Southeastern U.S. to offer focused ultrasound for tremors.

Focused ultrasound uses sound waves to target a small area of the brain responsible for tremors. The sound waves generate heat to remove or destroy the cells causing the tremor without harming nearby tissue.

Most patients experience immediate, often dramatic, tremor improvement with focused ultrasound.

  • Emory is also one of only a few hospitals in the nation that offers Gamma Knife® radiotherapy.

Our Gamma Knife® machine is the latest in Gamma Knife® therapy. It combines the best of everything we have learned about radiosurgery in one machine. We are the first in Georgia and only one of seven in the nation with this technology.

This procedure treats problem areas in the brain with radiation to reduce tremors. It protects the healthy surrounding tissue. There is no knife used or incision made.

This treatment option can help you avoid surgery. Because it's safe and doesn't involve incisions, the procedure is outpatient.

  • To treat Parkinson’s disease, surgeons insert a needle-like probe into your brain. They send radiofrequency waves through the probe. These waves kill the damaged brain tissue causing abnormal impulses.

Additional Options

You may also try supplemental treatments for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. These therapies include:

  • Exercise to maintain strength and support mental health
  • Stress management techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to relax

Your doctor will work with you to design a personalized treatment plan that will help meet your goals.
