Neuromuscular disorders affect your nerves, muscles and the connections between them. These disorders can result in muscle weakness or muscle loss. Ultimately, they can make it hard to function normally.
Along with physical and neurological exams, your doctor may order several tests to make a diagnosis. Depending on your symptoms and family history, these might include blood tests, genetic tests and imaging scans. Other tests include:
- Nerve and muscle biopsies: We offer biopsies through our neuromuscular pathology lab. This is a regional referral lab. We serve Emory Healthcare patients as well as patients from across Atlanta and the Southeast.
- Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG): We offer these tests through our electrodiagnostic lab. They measure how well your nerves and muscles communicate. We also offer neuromuscular ultrasound. In total, we perform more than 1,500 of these tests each year.
The goals of neuromuscular care depend on your condition and how severe it is.
